SLC (School Leaving Certificate) which in Nepal is commonly known as one of the most important exam to enter their higher secondary school or college life. SLC
was introduced long ago in order to judge the creativity of students
while giving exams which will allow them for further studies.
The
main motive behind SLC is to check whether a student is good enough for
further studies & his capability with marks obtained however
cheating has always been a issue which one way or other allows some
non-talented student pass with good marks which OCE(of the Controller of
Examinations) are concerned about. Marking system in SLC
Marking system of SLC was always in the circle of questions regarding
“Can 32 marks (minimum marks to pass a subject) judge a normal student
& their hard work of a 10 year?” and this call for a new grading
system in SLC.
The quality of academics was surely questioned one way or the other & National Curriculum Development
and Evaluation Council was much more in the state of dilemma whether to
change marking system or to make it effective. SLC have a long history
& there has been many changes till now & one of the prime change
was when SLC course curriculum was only based for 10th grade syllabus
which previously student had to read both 9th & 10th grade syllabus
after this change was only limited to 10th grade syllabus.
There
were much more changes in upcoming year which facilitate students
passing with quality marks & making SLC bit easier then it
previously was. Changes in way of giving SLC & it’s importance for future was increased as SLC certificate was not only helpful for secondary level even for bachelor level & degree level.
Marking system of SLC was in the following format:
Full Marks: 100
Pass Marks: 32 (For non-practical subjects)
This was just a basic format of total marks however there was a way to determine the very talented student an average student or a normal student based on percentage achieved or division.

This was just a basic format of total marks however there was a way to determine the very talented student an average student or a normal student based on percentage achieved or division.
The percentage & division were separated in following way:
- Distinction: Students whose marks are 80% or above
- First Division: Students whose marks are 60% or above
- Second Division: Students whose marks are 45% or above
- Third Division: Students whose marks are 32% or above
- Fail: Students whose marks are less than 32%
The
result of SLC is very important to every individual student since they
can apply for scholarship as per their results & marks obtained in
SLC. Government was in plan to change the education system in Nepal
because marking system already had lot of criticism. Grading system in
SLC examinations Government recently introduced a new education system
in Nepal which is based on grading SLC examinations. From the upcoming
year with removal of marking system grading system will start as per
news report it is confirmed there will be a new way to publish the
result.
The new grading system in SLC has been prepared by the Curriculum Development Center and
was officially passed by the National Curriculum Development and
Evaluation Council. In new grading system students will either get a
pass status or fail status so in general there won’t be either first
division second or third also there won’t be how much mark does
individual students get. This is one of the best steps adopted by the
government to mainly focus on how to improve the secondary level exam
evaluation process. However grading evaluation system will be carried
out for Classes Nine and 10 both during school life. Experts are
optimistic about this new grading system will minimize these negative
effects. Marking system was always a problem for those average students
who were either on first or second divisions. Many students fail in the
SLC finals due to the number grading system, and this had caused
negative effects on their future study that is why new grading system in
SLC is implemented.
According to new grading system in SLC result will be as follows:
- Students securing above 90%: A+
- Students securing between (80-89)%: A
- Students securing between (60-79)%: B
- Students securing between (40-59)%: C
- Students securing between (25-39)%: D
- Students securing below 25% : E
Government
officials of education ministry are hoping this step (new grading
system in SLC) will narrow down the gap between students. What we can do
is wait for the impact this grading system to make.
